Care about Everything

Hey small business owners, or small business owners to be. I wanted to pass along a little advice and ask for a little advice as well, if I could. While it is essential to delegate tasks to your staff to maintain your sanity, it is equally important to realize that no one is going to care about the goings-on around your business like you will. Therefore, pay attention to everything.

Am I a micro-manager? I like to thing not. Where I get myself into trouble is thinking that others simply won't pay as much attention to details as I would, so I tend to shoulder-surf. Or worse yet, I don't delegate tasks and increase my workload. I have gotten better over the years, but there are still times that this attitude comes back to haunt me.

So let me open this up to you. What have you done to overcome this? What resources have you found that teach how to balance delegation with "keeping your hands in everything?" I think about leaders such as Walt Disney, Bill Gates, and Don Hewitt and how they put their personal stamp of approval on everything.

As we press forward with our small business startup, After Hours Improv Theater, I struggle to find the balance. I would love to hear your input and suggestions.

  1. Handing out responsibility comes with accountability. For people to buy in on the whole accountability bit, they need to feel that they are part of the success. They need to feel involved in the success/failures and be able to make decisions on their own. Trusted side kicks will only elevate you to a higher level as they bring themselves up also. I have seen this first hand over the past two years!
