You Better Love It

Small business tip el numero uno. Love your product. Love what you are doing. Believe in it, and sell out for it. Because, there are going to be days when everything is going to go bad. Real bad. And it is at these times when you will have to pause and ask yourself, "why on earth am I doing this?" And the answer better be, because you love it. If you are starting your own business because you think it is going to be the answer to all of your financial problems, then I've got bad news for you. However, if you are starting your business because it is something you love and believe in, then at least you have that.

Shari and I love the arts. Specifically, the theater. We met on stage. I proposed to Shari on-stage, and have met some of our closest friends on-stage. After Hours Improv is our love and dream. For so long we have dreamed about the idea of owning and operating our own theater. And it is now finally happening. But, believe me, there have been hurdles. Capital costs alone nearly stopped the project cold. Then there is the strain of being a small business owner who has a partner that is also your spouse (a topic for another day). I am incredibly lucky to have married my best friend, and on most days, we are on the same page. But, owning and operating your business can put a strain on your marriage. Throw in a 17 month old and the journey can get really interesting.

All of this to say, you better believe in your product. You better love it. Because if you don't, then there isn't much chance of success.
